Love Medicine

by Louise Erdrich

Signed by the Author

Set on and around a North Dakota Ojibwe reservation, the first novel by bestselling, National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich is the epic story about the intertwined fates of two families: the Kashpaws and the Lamartines.

With astonishing virtuosity, each chapter draws on a range of voices to limn its tales. Black humor mingles with magic, injustice bleeds into betrayal, and through it all, bonds of love and family marry the elements into a tightly woven whole that pulses with the drama of life.

Filled with humor, magic, injustice and betrayal, Erdrich blends family love and loyalty in a stunning work of dramatic fiction

dear Louise,
I have been reading your books for years. Lucky me! I just returned from a visit to see my little sister in Austin, Last night we were sitting up in bed talking( her boys and husband were already asleep) and i grabbed my book from the bedside table and read her a passage I had starred in The Round House...
...when Cappy and Joe swap shoes...

and I told Sara..Louise Erdrich is my favorite author
and you are.
and i send you many many thanks. I am in awe.

Ms. Erdrich, I discovered Love Medicine last April after it was assigned reading for one of my college classes: I can only say, I wish I would have discovered it (and your other books!) sooner! With each of your books I read, I feel myself conducted on a journey with your characters, learning not only more about them but also about myself. There are few authors whose writing moves me as much as you; with Love Medicine, I was introduced to a world where the past, the present, and the future meld together in surprising ways; where the physical and the spiritual are both powerfully present; where fate and chance, as well as personal decisions, are given beautiful treatment. I just finished Tales of Burning Love last night--and wow!--going to start Last Report on Miracles at Little No Horse ASAP. Journeying with your characters has been--and will continue to be--such a lovely addition to my days and nights. Thank you for your stories, I'll never stop reading (and re-reading...) them! Sincerely, Karah Mitchell

Good evening Ms. Erdrich,

I thought that I would send you an email to say that I am an Englishman in Sweden and am teaching "Love Medicine" for the third year to my IB students. Wanting a different kind of text for an English class to work with, I discovered your novel which - when discussing narrative styles and plot - was perfect for my cause.

My students, who also read texts written by Sophocles, Shakespeare, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Orwell and Gaimen to name but a few, tend to enjoy the storytelling attributes of Love medicine. I may oreder the rest of your novels in order to enrich the lives of my future students.

Thank you.
