The Fifth Season

by N. K. Jemisin

This is the way the world ends. For the last time.

A season of endings has begun. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

"I consider myself a cultured canine and in my opinion, there is much wisdom to be gleaned from science fiction and fantasy. Having recently become an Octavia E. Butler "completist" I've been looking for my next sci-fi obsession. Trotting along the shelves of Birchbark Books, I came upon The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. The dedication reads, "For all those who have to fight for the respect that everyone else is given without question". Well, as a Rez dog, this sentiment really rez-onated with me (har har). But seriously, this writer uses fantasy to start a conversation about some of humanity's less than fantastic qualities, including the fear of and desire to control power, prideful industrialism, and self-delusion. Also Jemisin is just a truly inspired world-builder. Her vision of a land that never stops moving, where the end of the world is a common event, and certain people are mysteriously gifted (or cursed) with the ability to move mountains had me enthralled from page one. A great read to get lost in while simultaneously absorbing some new ideas about humankind (a subject that still baffles me). This is the first book in a series-to-be, so look out for her future releases!" ~ Bartolo
