The Master Butchers Singing Club at the Guthrie Theater! World premiere September 11 - November 6, 2010. Adapted for the stage by Pulitzer winner Marsha Norman. Directed by Francesca Zambello. Visit the Guthrie Theater website for further information and tickets.

Having survived World War I, Fidelis Waldvogel returns to his quiet German village and marries the pregnant widow of his best friend, killed in action. With a suitcase full of sausages and a master butcher's precious knife set, Fidelis sets out for America. In Argus, North Dakota, he builds a business, a home for his family--which includes Eva and four sons--and a singing club consisting of the best voices in town. When the Old World meets the New--in the person of Delphine Watzka--the great adventure of Fidelis's life begins. Delphine meets Eva and is enchanted. She meets Fidelis, and the ground trembles. These momentous encounters will determine the course of Delphine's life, and the trajectory of this brilliant novel.

I just finished reading this novel for the second time, and found my experience of it even richer and more deeply moving than the first time I read it. My admiration and respect for the vision and craft of Louise Erdrich, if not boundless, is at least many orders of magnitude greater than that which I bear for any other living writer. If you have not yet read this book, I highly recommend doing so.

Many of my family read her books and now we are reading them over. This book inspired me and many other North Dakotans even though it is about LITTLE FALLS, Minnnesota. Much wisdom here about world unity beginning at home. I searched for copy of my review but can't find it. One thing that was evident was character, Step and a Half, and think she is
in most of Erdrich's novels. Zambello's direction of play make this a must see event at THE GUTHRIE. I completely agree with this choice of her many stories being the one chosen for theatrical production.

This is one of the most brilliant novels I have read. Being born from a father of German parentage, I felt his emotional and psychic world was opened to me in a new way in the character of Fidelis, both dark and light, and so often unexpressed except through music. There were passages in this book of such beauty and poignancy, from the simplest description of an old dog walking down a hallway to the scene of Fidelis' collapse, that I read them again and again, sometimes to myself and sometimes out loud.

I thorougly enjoyed reading this book by my high school classmate, then known as Karen Erdrich! The picture of her grandfather on the cover of the hard cover edition, reminded me of her younger brother Mark, who was just a year behind me in school... It
was a special treat to read this book which detailed her German ancestry -- an ancestry I share. It was also fun to read of the Brauche...I hadn't heard of this until I was living in Bismarck, ND, and became better acquainted with the Germans from Russia subculture.
It has been fun to read and to recall the author as someone who lived two streets away from me, attended the same schools and with whom I was part of the same German club in high school.
